I'm grading the finals on poetry and poetry vocab today (yesterday was the last day of the semester).

I just have to show you one answer a kid gave me. It shows real imagination!

They were to be analyzing the poem "Stopping by Woods..." by Robert Frost.

The final lines of which are:

And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

The question was "How does the meter reinforce the meaning of the poem?"

The student correctly identified that meter as 8, then answered the question this way:

"If you turn an 8 sideways then it becomes infinity, which shows how many miles he has to go before he sleeps."

No credit, but very creative!

He doesn't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most true neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil after all, he would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, he's not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Some true neutral characters, on the other hand, commit themselves philosophically to neutrality. They see good, evil, law, and chaos as prejudices and dangerous extremes. They advocate the middle way of neutrality as the best, most balanced road in the long run. True neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you act naturally, without prejudice or compulsion. However, true neutral can be a dangerous alignment because it represents apathy, indifference, and a lack of conviction.

Race:
Elves are known for their poetry, song, and magical arts, but when danger threatens they show great skill with weapons and strategy. Elves can live to be over 700 years old and, by human standards, are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. Elves are slim and stand 4.5 to 5.5 feet tall. They have no facial or body hair, prefer comfortable clothes, and possess unearthly grace. Many others races find them hauntingly beautiful.

Class:
Sorcerers are arcane spellcasters who manipulate magic energy with imagination and talent rather than studious discipline. They have no books, no mentors, no theories just raw power that they direct at will. Sorcerers know fewer spells than wizards do and acquire them more slowly, but they can cast individual spells more often and have no need to prepare their incantations ahead of time. Also unlike wizards, sorcerers cannot specialize in a school of magic. Since sorcerers gain their powers without undergoing the years of rigorous study that wizards go through, they have more time to learn fighting skills and are proficient with simple weapons. Charisma is very important for sorcerers; the higher their value in this ability, the higher the spell level they can cast.

Find out What Kind of Dungeons and Dragons Character Would You Be?, courtesy of Easydamus</a></b> (e-mail)

<lj:music>Elvis Costello - Allison</lj:music>

I hope my whole f-list has a very Happy Christmas (Happy because I'm seekritly snooty and British) and gets what they very most hoped for.

Me and the Mr. were supposed to be in San Diego on Thursday night. Instead we are stuck here in the aftermath of the biggest blizzard since, if the rambly woman down the street is any expert, 1982. The snow started Wednesday, I barely made it home and the car was stuck halfway up the driveway. The Mr. barely made it into the neighborhood and got his car totally stuck in a snow drift and had to hike over to the house.

We were not able to dig ourselves out enough to pull my car forward until Friday, and the other car was not freed until Saturday. We were able to leave the house for the first time on Saturday. We went out to eat LOL. There was no way I was cooking again :P

Thankfully, we were able to reschedule our flight because DIA was shut down and all flights cancelled for 45 hours. So we will be going to SD for New Year's. Which I am very happy about, because I really, really miss my family. I was extremely depressed when I thought we'd have to cancel altogether.

We went to see a movie yesterday, "The Holiday." It stars Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz, and Jude Law. The first two people on the list I LOVE, the second two I couldn't care less about. So that was a little weird. Premise - Cam and Kate's characters exchange houses after painful episodes with their "boyfriends." Then each find themselves and, of course since this is a Hollywood movie, new love in their holiday country.

It was painful to watch Cameron Diaz on the screen. She was over-acting like crazy -- think of her performance, and I use that term loosely, in Charlie's Angels and then remove it from the ironic tone of that movie. Place it into a light romantic comedy where she's playing off people that can actually act. Yeah, that bad.

Kate Winslet and Jack Black were awesome as always. Because I have as wide and varied a taste in men as it possible to have, I find Jack Black very attractive, in the common parlance, I'd hit that. So I totally bought him as a romantic lead. He was funny, charming, and really dialed down his Jack Black-ness to hit into this movie.

The story barely mattered, it was really the character's finding each other... It was light and trivial and fun. Both the Mr. and I really enjoyed it.

My student teaching appointment is almost complete and I got my first choice school. I'M SO EXCITED!

This has been the worst year. I've been so disconnected from everyone, my participation in all my lovely LJ friends entries has plummeted. But I made it through :) I hope to be able to talk to you guys lots more in the coming months and hopefully have some great student teaching stories to share *hee hee*

    <lj:music>Grandmaster Flash - The Message</lj:music>

So I took one of those silly meme-type quizzes today. This one was to judge your emotional acquity or some such BS.

But one page really grabbed my attention. Photos were displayed and you had to choose what you thought was happening in the photo. Very interesting exercise

WARNING - big pics behind cut

Please examine the waving guy.

11.

He...
is one of the photographer's best friends, ever.
doesn't know the shooter, so he's giving an ironic 'stranger wave.'

Two friends unexpectedly kiss at a bar.

12.

Is this kiss real or fake-for-the-camera?
It's a real kiss, they have no shame.
It's fake; they have no shame.

This one shows my younger sister and her two best friends. Two of the three are hyper-religious virgins. One is a sensible young woman who's blossoming all over the place.

13.

Who's who here?
The girl on the left is the non-virgin.
The girl on the right is the non-virgin.
The girl in the middle is the non-virgin.

Last day of classes this year.

14.

Pick the true statement.
These people are sleeping together.
The girl has never slept with anyone.

Behold. Two young ladies attempt to unwind.

15. Guess the truth...
the girl on the left committed suicide less than one month after this picture was taken.
the girl on the right committed suicide less than one month after this picture was taken.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought it was a hell of a good test of my ability to read people and interpret situations. No answers were given as to the truth of the photos, but I'd love to hear what you guys thought.

My Choices
11. b
12. a
13. a (though didn't the wording really give it away?)
14. b
15. a

    <lj:music>S! - S.S. and the Ses</lj:music>

Everyone can thank roniabirk for this meme. I downloaded some great new songs based on following the links through peoples journals.

Basically, you ask for a letter and then make a post on your own journal of 5 songs made by bands beginning with your letter.

Rons gave me the deceptively simple "S." The hard part was narrowing it down!

1. Screeching Weasel - Amy Saw Me Looking At Her Boobs - I think most of my Flist will get why I love this song! ;D

2. Sloan - The Other Man - Ever since I put this song on my SSGinLA mix CD I've been pretty much obsessed with it.

3. Sobule, Jill - I Kissed A Girl - Awesome, fun song. It's controversial, yet catchy!

4. Switchfoot - Amy's Song - OK, now I just seem egotistical... but it's a great song!

5. Simply Red - Money's Too Tight To Mention - This last spot was really a toss-up between "Holding Back The Years" by Simply Red and this song. It was a HARD choice.

Ronia told me that the "S" was for Simon. So in honor of that, here are 5 of my favorite Paul Simon/Simon & Garfunkel songs:

1. Simon & Garfunkel - America

2. Simon & Garfunkel - I Am A Rock - the original, and still the best EMO song

3. Simon, Paul - Still Crazy After All These Years

4. Simon, Paul - Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard

5. Simon, Paul - Kodachrome
